Level 6 Water Treatment Operations students from ATU Sligo visited the Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant for a hands-on tour focused on treatment processes, safety and compliance at a facility serving communities across South Sligo.
Accompanied by lecturer Lisa Cronin, the group spent Friday morning on site to observe how a live water treatment plant operates in practice. The programme equips students and industry professionals with the skills to run and maintain water and wastewater plants, covering treatment processes, compliance, health and safety, monitoring systems and plant maintenance.
During the tour, students explored the chloramination process in operation and learned about the maintenance routines and operational controls required to keep the plant running safely and in line with contractual obligations.
The Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant is a key asset for the region, supplying clean drinking water to Tubbercurry, Ballymote and surrounding areas. It uses modern processes including filtration, UV disinfection and chloramination to help deliver a safe, reliable supply for local communities.
The visit was supported by Coffey team members including Enda Commons, Conor Tully (Regional Supervisor) and operators Dylan Willis and Paul McGrath, who shared their experience and took questions from students.
Visits like this connect classroom learning with real-world infrastructure and help inspire the next generation of professionals entering the water industry. It is always encouraging to see strong interest and enthusiasm from students exploring careers in the sector.
