EirGrid, the operator of Ireland's electricity grid, has announced that marine and coastal surveys for its Powering Up Offshore - South Coast programme will commence this April.
This next phase of site investigation follows a successful initial round of surveys completed in 2025.
The programme is designed to establish the transmission infrastructure required to integrate offshore generated power into the national grid, with "Tonn Nua" identified as the first area to be connected. Upon completion, the project is expected to provide approximately 900 megawatts of additional electricity, a capacity sufficient to power nearly one million homes.
Specialist contractor Fugro has been appointed to conduct the geophysical, geotechnical, and environmental surveys. These works will collect comprehensive data regarding seabed conditions and marine ecology. EirGrid has stated that this information is vital for informing project design and ensuring development remains considerate of the local marine ecosystem and coastal communities.
In conjunction with the survey launch, EirGrid is embarking on a community engagement tour across Cork, Waterford, and Wexford. A mobile information unit will host a series of public events to provide updates on project timelines, survey activities, and feedback opportunities.
Public Information Event Schedule:
• Cork (8 April): Churchtown South Community Hall (10am - 1pm); Aghada Community Centre (2pm – 5pm).
• Cork (9 April): Garryvoe Beach Car Park (10am – 5pm).
• Waterford (14 April): Tramore Promenade (10am - 1pm); Bunmahon Beach Car Park (2pm – 5pm).
• Wexford (15 April): Fethard Main Street (10am - 1pm); Carrick on Bannow Community Hall (2pm – 5pm).
• Online: A Zoom webinar will be held on Thursday, 23 April, from 7pm to 8.30pm.
Sinéad Dooley, EirGrid's Head of Public Engagement, said: "We believe the Powering Up Offshore - South Coast project represents a tremendous opportunity for Ireland, in meeting climate targets, securing our electricity supply and creating lasting economic benefits for local communities.
"We invite everyone to come along, meet our team, ask questions about the infrastructure works that will take place off the south coast, and about EirGrid's role in connecting clean renewable energy to the national grid. It is imperative that we hear from local communities, so our projects are reflective of the needs and priorities of people in the local area."
Dooley added: "While there will be further opportunities to engage on this programme later this year, we would encourage people to attend these public information events so they can meet the team and ask any questions they may have at this stage."
The initiative supports the Irish Government's Climate Action Plan, which aims to generate 80% of the nation's electricity from renewable sources.
