Construction has officially begun on a major public realm improvement project along the Shankill Road in Belfast, Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced.
The Shankill Gateway Public Realm scheme will cover the area from the Peter's Hill/North Street junction through to the Agnes Street/Northumberland Street junction. It represents the first phase of a wider plan to enhance the Shankill Road through environmental and infrastructure upgrades.
The £3.18 million project, fully funded by the Department for Communities, is expected to take around 12 months to complete. Planned improvements include new natural stone paving, tree planting, upgraded street furniture and enhanced pedestrian crossings. The scheme will also allow for carriageway widening where possible to improve access for public transport into the city centre.
"I am pleased to announce that construction has now begun on the Shankill Gateway Public Realm Scheme. This long-awaited investment marks a significant milestone for the Shankill Road, enhancing its role as a vibrant, welcoming and well-connected corridor, improving quality of life for residents, and strengthening the local economy.
"My department's investment will enhance the appearance and character of the area, boost local businesses, encourage active travel, and help create a safer, more accessible environment for everyone who lives, works or visits here. When complete, the Shankill Gateway Scheme will deliver a modern, high-quality public realm that supports economic growth and reinforces the strong community identity that defines the Shankill Road."
The project forms part of a broader regeneration programme aimed at improving public spaces, supporting inclusive economic growth and strengthening connectivity across Belfast. Officials said the initiative builds on previous commitments to enhance public realm quality and support community-led regeneration in the area.
