SSE has named Kirby Group Engineering and Sungrow as the main contractors for the 100MW/200MWh Derrymeen Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project near Dungannon in County Tyrone.
The move follows confirmation earlier this year that SSE Renewables had begun site preparation and enabling works at Derrymeen ahead of full construction beginning in the coming months.
Sungrow will provide the battery energy storage technology, while Kirby Group Engineering will handle construction, integration and Balance of Plant (BoP) works. On-site activity is expected to continue through to late 2027.

The appointment of Kirby Group Engineering and Sungrow marks a significant milestone in advancing the Derrymeen Battery Energy Storage System project. SSE Renewables said the project will add flexible energy infrastructure to support Northern Ireland's transition to a cleaner, more resilient electricity system.
Once operational, the 100MW/200MWh Derrymeen facility will help integrate renewable generation onto the grid and strengthen security of supply.
