Farrans has marked a key milestone at Bristol Airport after an overnight operation last week lifted the first section of the 'Bailey Bridge' into place using a 750T mobile crane.
The temporary structure links Farrans’ compound to the airport’s first floor, creating a landside bubble to streamline the movement of plant, materials and personnel into the centre of the site.
Work began earlier this year on a two-storey terminal extension, infilling the space between the existing terminal building and the departure gates. The project will support growth to 12 million passengers a year, providing more space and almost doubling the number of shops and restaurants, with 17 new units planned.
There will also be room for island retail units and additional seating designed for comfort. The arrivals hall will gain a new domestic baggage reclaim area with an extra carousel, increasing capacity by 20%. Accessibility at immigration will be improved with new lifts and stairs.
