LGIU Ireland has released a new case study highlighting the regeneration of Gorey Market House as an exemplar of adaptive reuse and inclusive community engagement. The early 19th-century landmark, located at the centre of a town of more than 7,000 people, is set for a major restoration that will revitalise the building while safeguarding its architectural and cultural significance.
As Managing Authority for the Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021–2027, the Southern Regional Assembly is working with Wexford County Council to deliver the project. The scheme has secured €7 million in THRIVE funding, co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union, with a further €2m ring-fenced by Wexford County Council. Local councillors have strongly supported the initiative, recognising the benefits of a shared civic and cultural space for Gorey and the wider North Wexford area.
The redevelopment is firmly grounded in New European Bauhaus principles—sustainability, inclusivity and beauty—guiding both the design approach and the community engagement process to reflect leading European urban development standards.
