2026 Shop Front Enhancement Scheme Opens Across County Longford

Longford County Council and the Local Enterprise Office have launched the Shop Front Enhancement Scheme 2026, offering financial assistance to small independent retailers in towns and villages across the county.

Grants of up to €600, or 50% of eligible costs (whichever is lower), are available to improve the appearance, safety and accessibility of shopfronts in core retail areas.

Eligible works include painting and repairs, replacement windows or doors, signage, floral displays and upgrades to pedestrian access, including Age Friendly measures. The scheme supports works visible from the street that help create welcoming town centres.

The scheme is open to retail businesses within designated town and village centres, provided commercial rates for the current year are paid in full. Only one grant per premises will be awarded and funding is limited.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Cllr Garry Murtagh said: "Our town and village centres matter. This scheme helps local businesses improve their shop fronts while keeping the character of our streets. Small changes can make a real difference for traders and customers alike."

Chief Executive of Longford County Council Paddy Mahon said: "Retailers are facing real cost pressures. This scheme is a practical way to support small independent businesses and to strengthen the overall appearance and accessibility of our towns and villages."

Applications are subject to available funding. Works must meet planning and development standards, with grants paid only after completion and inspection.

Application forms and full details are available at www.longfordcoco.ie or via the Local Enterprise Office website at www.localenterprise.ie/longford/enterprise-development/shopfront-enhancement-scheme/, or by contacting 043 3344243.

The Local Enterprise Office, Longford provides advice, information and support to start-ups and established companies seeking to grow in Longford and aims to foster a spirit of enterprise across Longford Town and the county. Contact the LEO office for the full range of services.
