The first section of the new multi-storey car park at Wexford General Hospital opened for use on Wednesday 8 April 2026, as part of a phased rollout over the coming weeks.
Construction, delivered by Tom O'Brien Construction Ltd, began in January last year. When fully operational, the facility will provide 356 parking spaces across seven split levels over four storeys.
The 11,624 m2 car park forms part of a wider civil and groundworks programme at the hospital, including realignment of the main entrance road and enabling works for the multi-storey Somerton Wing, a 97-bed ward development.
The new facility will replace the main car park on the Newtown Road side of the hospital. Parking charges will match existing on-site rates, with long-term and concession options available. Arrangements remain in place for those with disabilities and for temporary set-down.
The tender process for constructing the Somerton Wing, which will occupy the footprint of the former main car park, is nearing completion. An autumn 2026 start is anticipated, followed by a 28-month construction programme. The six-storey building will provide 97 single-occupancy en-suite bedrooms, enhancing patient care, comfort, dignity and infection control.
The 9,300 m2 Somerton Wing will be arranged around two landscaped courtyards. Each ward will include ancillary spaces such as a staff base, utilities, a meeting room, stores and visitor rooms, with new staff changing facilities plus Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy rooms at lower ground floor level.
