Uisce Éireann has confirmed that its major project to enhance water supply reliability in North Donegal has officially passed its halfway point. Work on the scheme, which serves the Port na Bláiche and An Craoslach areas, is now transitioning into the second phase of development.
So far, crews have successfully installed over 800 metres of new water mains. The remainder of the project involves the installation of an additional 500 metres of piping. Once finished, these upgrades are set to provide increased water supply security for residents and businesses in An Fhothair, Port na Bláiche, and Droim na Rátha, An Craoslach.
The project, which is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, focuses on replacing ageing water mains with modern infrastructure along sections of the N56 between An Fhothair and Droim na Rátha. This investment is designed to decrease leakage rates, lower the frequency of burst pipes, and improve the overall resilience of the local water network.
Uisce Éireann Programme Manager Patricia Lowry expressed satisfaction with the current progress and extended her gratitude to the local community.
"We are delighted to see this project pass the halfway point, with 800 metres of new water mains now in place. I would like to sincerely thank the local community for their continued support and patience as works progress into the next phase. These upgrades are critical to strengthening the water network and will deliver long term benefits, including improved reliability of supply, fewer bursts and reduced leakage."
To facilitate safe working conditions, traffic lights will remain in operation for the duration of the construction period. Uisce Éireann has confirmed that access for local traffic and emergency services will be maintained at all times.
Farrans Construction is delivering the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with the project slated for completion in early summer 2026. This initiative is part of a broader national effort to improve water quality, ensure a more sustainable supply, and achieve significant water savings across Ireland.
