Gas Networks Ireland has opened applications for its 2026 Apprenticeship Programme, with the new intake due to begin in October.

The national gas utility is seeking apprentices across plumbing, electrical instrumentation, and mechanical automation and maintenance fitting.

Recruits will gain experience on Ireland's €3 billion, 14,758km national gas network – one of Europe's safest and most modern – which supplies over 30% of the country's total energy and 40% of its electricity generation, while contributing to the company's net zero ambitions and the broader energy transition.

The four-year programme blends paid, on-the-job learning with formal study, supported by dedicated mentors and technical training coaches.

Delivered in partnership with SOLAS, classroom elements will take place through Education and Training Boards and relevant Technological Universities. The curriculum also includes 'Understanding the Business' modules and personal development to provide a rounded view of the organisation.

Apprentices will build a broad set of skills: mechanical apprentices will cover welding, turning and fabrication; electrical apprentices will learn installation, maintenance and calibration of systems and sensors; and plumbing apprentices will train in pipework systems, welding, soldering, and gas meter installation and maintenance.

On completion, participants will receive a QQI Advanced Level 6 Certificate, recognised nationally and internationally as the craftsperson standard.

Successful candidates will help operate and maintain the national gas infrastructure serving more than 720,000 customers, including installing, inspecting and testing pipework, gas meters and pressure regulators.

Apprentices will also support Ireland's shift to cleaner energy, as Gas Networks Ireland advances renewable gas solutions such as biomethane and hydrogen.
