Heron Bros has successfully supported the Magherafelt Rural Learning Partnership Shared Education Technology & Design Project, an initiative delivered in collaboration with MEGA (Mid Ulster English & Global Associates) and Construction Futures.
The project provided students from Kilronan School, St Connor's College, and St Colm's High School, Draperstown, with a comprehensive look into professional careers within the construction and manufacturing sectors. The programme was delivered across two distinct sessions, combining industrial tours with practical application.
The first stage of the project took place in February at the Heron Manufacture Ltd facility in Draperstown. Pupils were given a guided tour of the manufacturing plant, where they observed the end-to-end process of how bespoke timber products are designed and developed. Members of the Heron team were on hand to explain the technical aspects of manufacturing and the various career paths available within the industry.
In April, the focus shifted to practical skill-building as the Heron team visited St Colm's High School to host a dedicated workshop. During this session, students worked directly with timber to assemble a window frame, gaining an understanding of the precision and craftsmanship required in professional joinery.
A notable highlight of the workshop was the participation of first-year apprentice Daniel McCool. Returning to his former school, Daniel supported the students during the assembly process and shared his personal insights into transitioning from secondary education into a construction apprenticeship.
The initiative reflects an ongoing commitment by Heron Bros and its partners to engage with local schools and provide tangible links between the classroom and the evolving requirements of the modern construction and manufacturing workforce.
