Farrans has successfully completed its role as the main contractor for RWE's Camster II Onshore Wind Farm in Caithness, Scotland. The project is now fully operational and commissioned, providing 36 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy—enough to power the equivalent of approximately 51,000 homes.
The 10-turbine development received consent in July 2021, with Farrans beginning construction in 2023. The site reached the milestone of first power in March 2026 and is the first to be completed among four new RWE onshore wind farms currently under construction in Scotland.
Throughout the delivery of the scheme, Farrans supported over 50 roles and provided opportunities for two civil engineering students and an apprentice. Demonstrating a commitment to local economic impact, the contractor appointed 54% of its subcontractors from within 20 miles of the site, representing 56% of the total subcontract expenditure.
Patrick Murray, Regional Director for Farrans, commented: "We are delighted to see Camster II now supplying homes and contributing to our national renewable energy targets. Our extensive portfolio in delivering onshore wind farms and our long history of operations in Scotland meant that we were well placed to be the main contractor for RWE, a client we have developed an excellent longstanding relationship with."
Sopna Sury, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, added: "By completing Camster II we've once again demonstrated RWE's expertise in delivering onshore wind farms, while creating meaningful value for local communities and economies. Each turbine that's turning is a visible sign of RWE's continued progress in onshore renewables and is a tremendous success for our teams on site, for the communities in Caithness and for Scotland's energy transition. My thanks go to everyone involved for achieving this milestone safely and efficiently."
The project has also been noted for its environmental innovation, specifically a trial involving the reuse of peat from turbine foundations for forestry reinstatement, which received recognition from Nature Scot. Additionally, the team improved local amenities by resurfacing a core path and installing a new equestrian gate.
The completion of Camster II further cements the relationship between the two firms, with Farrans currently supporting RWE on the construction of the 62.7MW Golticlay wind farm. RWE's total annual contribution to Caithness community funds is now set to exceed £580,000, adding to the £3.5 million already invested in local initiatives to date.
