BAM has finished the first phase of the Ceannt Station upgrade in Galway, marking a significant step in the modernisation of one of the city's key transport hubs.
Undertaken for Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), the works were completed safely and on programme within a live city‑centre station, carefully coordinating with daily rail operations and working sensitively within a protected historic structure dating back to 1851.
Phase 1 provides a new main train hall, three new rail platforms (platforms 3, 4 and 5), a curved glazed roof, a new southern entrance, expanded concourse and waiting areas, along with new passenger facilities and retail units. The enhancements increase capacity and improve passenger circulation.
Delivery depended on detailed planning and close collaboration between BAM, Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), the design team and the wider supply chain, with safety, coordination and quality central throughout. The project is supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage's Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and the National Transport Authority.
With Phase 1 complete, Phase 2 has begun on the northern concourse. This stage includes conservation works to the protected north station building, originally opened in 1851, and the refurbishment of platforms 1 and 2. Once finished, the scheme will create a modern, fully integrated and accessible transport hub, strengthening connectivity in Galway and supporting sustainable travel across the region.
