The Transmission Grid Operators for Ireland and Spain, EirGrid and Red Eléctrica, have expressed strong support following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Madrid. The agreement, signed by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, formalises a commitment to investigate the potential for an electricity interconnector between the two nations.
This MoU represents the initial phase in evaluating the benefits and technical feasibility of a link between Ireland and Spain. The collaboration involves close partnership between governments, transmission system operators, and European entities to determine viable pathways for the project.
Furthermore, the joint studies will align with the European Commission's broader strategy to increase the level of interconnection across European regions and member states.
Following the signing, Cathal Marley, CEO of EirGrid, stated: "The commitment to study the potential for an Irish-Spanish Interconnector is a significant step for the development of our systems and has the potential to play a key role in helping us to move towards greater European energy independence.
"Strengthening Ireland's interconnection with our neighbours is essential to delivering a secure, low‑carbon energy system and to maximising the benefits of renewable energy for consumers across Ireland and Europe.
"EirGrid looks forward to continuing to work closely with colleagues across Red Eléctrica, the Irish Government, and European partners as we collectively advance a cleaner, more secure, and more interconnected energy future."
Roberto García Merino, CEO at Redeia, added: "Enhanced electricity interconnection is strategically important in supporting the European Union's objectives for decarbonisation, energy security, and the effective integration of renewable energy sources.
"Redeia looks forward to further engaging with EirGrid, the Spanish Government, and European partners to advance the early-stage feasibility studies in line with the European Union's interconnection objectives. By connecting our electricity systems, we can support the energy transition and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable power system for Spain, Ireland, and Europe."
