Shay Murtagh, the Mullingar-based precast concrete specialist, has played a key role in the delivery of the Waterside Bridge, a significant new infrastructure project for Nottingham City Council. The bridge represents the first new crossing over the River Trent in over 65 years and is designed as a sustainable transport link dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists.
The project connects Lady Bay with the Trent Basin regeneration area. A vital aspect of the construction involved extensive concrete works to create high-quality public spaces and facilitate safe access to the 161-tonne steel structure.
The scheme showcased a partnership between Shay Murtagh and Evans, integrating different concrete finishes to meet the project's structural and aesthetic demands. Shay Murtagh manufactured the plain grey precast concrete units for the main entrance access ramp, providing the structural foundation required for heavy foot and cycle traffic. These units were engineered with precision to align perfectly with the landing levels of the bridge.
In contrast to the structural grey units, Evans supplied architectural precast elements for a seating amphitheatre and various planters. These components utilised a black acid-etched mix to provide a visual distinction. The amphitheatre features a spiral design, created to serve as a functional community space that blends into the riverside setting.
Balfour Beatty served as the lead delivery partner for the project, overseeing the installation of the bridge and coordinating the concrete works via the SCAPE framework.
The project utilised off-site manufacturing to ensure high quality standards were met while reducing the environmental impact on the sensitive riverside habitat. This collaborative approach between structural and architectural specialists has resulted in a vital link that supports Nottingham's commitment to sustainable travel and long-term urban connectivity.
