Uisce Éireann has confirmed that construction will begin next month on a significant water mains replacement project in West Roscommon. The infrastructure scheme will see the installation of over 5km of new, modern water piping to replace a network that has long been plagued by age-related bursts and service interruptions.
The move comes as the local network continues to show signs of strain, most notably following a burst this past Monday which once again disrupted service for residents. This investment is designed to provide a permanent solution, ensuring a resilient and secure water supply for the long term.
A wide range of local areas will benefit from the upgrades, including Meeltraun, Cloonfad village, 100 Acres, Clogher Upper, Derrylahan, Cornabanny, Swinefield, Fiddauns, Gorteenacammadil, Tonlegee (Co. Mayo), Culkeen, Pollanalty, Ballinross, Mountdelvin, and Moigh. Customers connected to the Johnstown/Levalleyroe Group Water Scheme are also set to see improvements in service reliability.
Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, welcomed the commencement of the works: "We're delighted to be commencing these important works between Cloonfad and Lowberry Cross next month. This project will replace ageing water mains that have been prone to frequent bursts, helping to significantly improve the reliability and resilience of the local water network. We would like to thank the community in advance for their patience and cooperation while these essential upgrades are carried out."
Farrans Construction has been appointed to deliver the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann. The works are expected to be fully completed by Spring 2027.
To ensure the safety of road users and construction crews, traffic management will be implemented along sections of the R327, consisting of lane closures and temporary traffic signals. Uisce Éireann has stated that all arrangements will be clearly signposted and that every effort will be made to keep local disruption to a minimum.
