Coffey has broken ground on the Roscommon Town Centre Public Realm Enhancement Project, marking a significant step in plans to create a safer, more accessible and more sustainable town centre for residents, businesses and visitors.
The programme will reshape key streets and spaces to prioritise active travel, strengthen connectivity and improve how people move through and experience the town each day.
Key elements of the scheme include:
- A new linear park and cycleway along Circular Road/N61, linking the Lanesboro Street roundabout to the Athlone Road roundabout, with additional pedestrian crossing points.
- Removal of the existing library store and reconfiguration of parking beside Roscommon Arts Centre.
- Better pedestrian links from the N61 through the Tesco car park to Main Street.
- Public realm and cycleway upgrades along Athlone Road and Brogan's Lane.
- Streetscape improvements on Goff Street from Church Street to the N63 junction.
- Enhancements to Church Street and Henry Street.
Taken together, these upgrades are designed to make movement around the town centre safer and more efficient, encourage walking and cycling, and refresh the look and usability of prominent public spaces.
The project aligns with wider investment across Ireland in active travel and sustainable urban infrastructure. Coffey brings extensive experience delivering complex civil engineering and public infrastructure schemes across Ireland and the UK, spanning transport, water, energy and urban development.
Works are now under way on site. Coffey will continue to engage with stakeholders, local businesses and the wider community throughout delivery to minimise disruption and support successful completion.
By investing in safer streets, dedicated active travel routes and improved public spaces, the scheme aims to create a more attractive, connected and future-ready town centre for generations to come.
