Works kicked off this week on a two-phase scheme to replace more than 570 metres of cast-iron mains with modern pipework. Phase one will take place at Newcastle Park and Newcastle Avenue, before moving to Costello Road for phase two. In total, 574 metres of new mains will be installed under Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Uisce Éireann Programme Manager Enda Mac Namara outlined the expected improvements for households and businesses. "Homes and businesses can look forward to an improved quality of drinking water in their taps once these mains upgrades are complete," said Enda.

Enda Mac Namara added: "The new pipework will also significantly reduce the risk of operational issues on the local network moving forward, while helping us to move towards our aim of driving down rates of leakage.

"We are cognisant that these works are being carried out close to entry points to University Hospital Galway. We have engaged with hospital management to ensure that they are aware of the works, and access to the hospital will be fully maintained at all times."

To carry out the upgrades safely, temporary traffic controls will be in place, including a lane closure managed by 2/3-way lights and a stop/go system. Local and emergency access will be maintained throughout. Some night-time working will be required to minimise disruption, with nearby residents to be notified in advance. Farrans Construction is delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion due in late June.

Through its National Leakage Reduction Programme, Uisce Éireann teams are fixing on average 2,000 leaks each month nationwide.

The utility says renewing old infrastructure will safeguard water supplies, improve customer service and build a stronger, more resilient network to meet growing demand, while it continues to provide public drinking water and wastewater services across Ireland.
