A landmark €30 million investment by Uisce Éireann to construct three new wastewater treatment plants across Donegal has been marked with a site visit to Kilmacrennan by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD.
The major infrastructure upgrades are entering their final operational phases across Kilmacrennan, Mountcharles and Carrigart. Once fully complete, the modernised facilities will deliver enhanced environmental protections for local coastal waters, bays and rivers, while establishing the necessary capacity to accommodate future regional business and housing developments.
Welcoming the milestones on the projects, Minister James Browne TD stated: "The progression of these three projects marks a major milestone for Donegal and represents a significant investment by the State in wastewater infrastructure across the county. Through the National Development Plan, the Government is making unprecedented investments in water and wastewater infrastructure nationwide, helping communities like Kilmacrennan, Carrigart and Mountcharles to grow sustainably and protect our environment for generations to come.
"Investment in our infrastructure is also investment in housing and the future homes which are dependent on wastewater services. These upgrades are critical in delivering modern wastewater infrastructure to support new homes, local employment and sustainable community growth. Aligned to our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities, this investment is bringing new homes on stream. Just as importantly, they will deliver lasting environmental benefits by protecting our rivers, bays and coastal waters."
The development works are being executed by Murphy Ireland on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Construction is currently in its final weeks, wrapping up a three-year building programme.
Expressing gratitude to local residents for their ongoing cooperation throughout the construction phase, Sean Callery, Uisce Éireann's Head of Infrastructure Delivery Wastewater, commented: "We are committed to delivering for communities across Donegal and these projects are part of our ongoing multimillion euro investment in wastewater infrastructure across the county. Following completion, communities will see the full benefits – from improved water quality and enhanced protection of waterways, to the capacity needed to support future development. Our teams on the ground have worked closely with the local communities to deliver these projects and I would like to thank people for their patience and cooperation during the last three years of construction. We're leaving behind an important legacy for future generations with modern wastewater infrastructure that will serve these communities well in the years ahead."
