Full weekend road closures will be implemented across several weekends in May and June to facilitate essential resurfacing works on Mountjoy Road, Old Mountfield Road, and Lisanelly Avenue in Omagh.

The Department for Infrastructure has confirmed that ongoing roadworks on the Mountjoy Road/Gortin Road continue to advance towards a scheduled contract completion date of October 2026. This carriageway improvement scheme is set to deliver a major upgrade to the local road network and represents an integral component of the Department of Education's development of the Strule Shared Education Campus (SSEC).

Work on the road network commenced late last year to accommodate the projected rise in pedestrian, public transport, and vehicular traffic once the new campus becomes operational. Upon completion, the upgraded infrastructure will establish a vital link to the campus from the north and west of the town, building upon previous infrastructure delivery such as the Strathroy Link Road completed in November 2019.

The upcoming phase involves the resurfacing of the junction connecting Mountjoy Road, Old Mountfield Road, and Lisanelly Avenue. To complete these works safely, three separate weekend full road closures are required.

The precise dates and times for the continuous closures are:

• Saturday 23 May from 6.00 am until 6.00 pm

• Friday 5 June from 8.00 pm until Monday 8 June at 6.00 am

• Saturday 20 June from 6.00 am until Monday 22 June at 6.00 am.

Signed diversion routes will be active during these periods:

• Main Diversion: Mountjoy Road, Gortin Road, Strathroy Road, Strathroy Link Road, Derry Road, Abbey Street, McConnell Place, Sedan Avenue and vice versa.

• Local Diversion: Old Mountfield Road, Killyclogher Road, Campsie Road, Market Street, Drumragh Avenue and vice versa.

The Department has collaborated closely with the SSEC contractor on the roadworks and traffic management planning to minimize public inconvenience. Road users are advised to plan for extra journey time and adhere to the alternative routes, which will be clearly signed on all approaches. Access will be maintained for emergency services, local property owners, and deliveries.

The completion of the resurfacing remains subject to favourable weather conditions, and the Department will provide updates regarding any schedule changes. All operations will be executed in accordance with current public health and health and safety guidelines, utilising safe working systems for both staff and contractors.
