Duggan Brothers Ltd has been appointed as the main contractor for the Swords Cultural Quarter construction works. The principal public realm elements — upgraded streets, new landscaping, improved lighting and a purpose-built events space — will be delivered in partnership with GLAS Civil Engineering Ltd.
Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Tom O'Leary said: "The Swords Cultural Quarter Public Realm is a key element to the wider Sustainable Swords initiative. This ambitious programme will revitalise the area surrounding Swords Castle, creating a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly civic space for residents and visitors alike, supporting cultural and community life in Fingal's County Town".
Works will proceed in stages. Phase One, focused on the end of Main Street, is scheduled to start in the last week of May 2026 and take up to three months. All street works are expected to be finished by the end of Quarter 1, 2027, with overall contract completion due in Quarter 2, 2027.
Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly said: "This investment reflects the Council's ongoing commitment to enhancing public spaces and supporting sustainable urban development in Swords. The project will deliver long-term benefits for the community, local businesses, and visitors, while preserving and celebrating the historic character of the area."
To enable Phase One to be delivered safely and efficiently, the two bus stops directly outside Fingal County Hall on each side of Main Street will be temporarily moved to nearby locations. Nine car parking spaces on each side will be used to facilitate this, with accessible bays on the east side retained and 2 of the 11 spaces kept on the west side. The first phase is expected to last up to 12 weeks, after which existing parking and bus stop arrangements will be reinstated.
Clear signage and regular updates will be provided to minimise disruption. Progress information will be shared via the Council's social media channels and the Sustainable Swords page on the Fingal County Council website.
