Galway City Council, in partnership with its public lighting maintenance contractor, has commenced a comprehensive public lighting upgrade programme across the city.

The infrastructure initiative involves the removal and replacement of existing public lighting columns, fittings, cabling, and ducting, alongside associated engineering works and final commissioning to ensure full compliance with current standards and specifications.

A central component of the project is an unbundling works programme. This process enables proper disconnection and testing procedures to be carried out, bringing the city's public lighting installations up to modern earthing and safety compliance standards.

Emergency upgrade works have been scheduled for the following estates over the coming months:

Q1 and Q2 2026:

• Pollnarooma West

• Rahylin Glebe and Rockland Avenue

• Tirellan Heights

• Clareview Park

Q2 and Q3 2026:

• Lurgan Park

• Lakeshore Drive to Mellows Park

• Murrough and Beach Ave Drive

• Castle Park (Phase 2)

• Siobhan McKenna Road (Phase 1)

Residents residing within each of the targeted estates will receive advance notification from the council prior to the commencement of works in their area.

Galway City Council is currently assessing additional locations for potential upgrade works during Q3 and Q4 2026. Details of these further areas will be published once the planning phase is finalised.
