Uisce Éireann has completed works in Codrum, Macroom, replacing 640 metres of outdated water mains with modern, resilient pipes to cut leaks and improve supply reliability; permanent road reinstatement will follow as part of the programme.
As part of the project, older mains prone to bursts and leaks were replaced, reducing the risk of interruptions and preventing the waste of treated drinking water.
The improved network will deliver greater reliability for homes and businesses across Macroom for years to come.
Uisce Éireann's Jack Cronin said: "These works are an important part of delivering a water service built to last. By replacing ageing pipes with modern, resilient infrastructure, we're improving water services today while strengthening resilience for the future.
"Our teams work with great care and experience to reduce the risk of supply interruptions for customers during works and we're grateful to the local community for their patience and support throughout these essential upgrades. This investment is rooted in care for the people we serve."
Following completion, the permanent road surface will be reinstated at a later stage as part of Uisce Éireann's project programme. The works were delivered by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
This upgrade forms part of efforts to tackle leakage nationwide. With more than 65,000kms of underground water mains — enough to circle the earth one and a half times — locating and repairing hidden leaks is challenging, but progress continues: national leakage is now at its lowest level, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
