Level 3 Land-based Engineering students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) recently participated in an educational site visit to McCauley Trailers in Toomebridge. The excursion provided students with valuable insights into modern manufacturing techniques and large-scale engineering operations.
The visit gave students a comprehensive overview of the full production lifecycle of a trailer, starting from the initial customer enquiry phase. They learned how specific customer requirements are interpreted and converted into detailed technical drawings by design engineers, ensuring that each final product is tailored to meet precise operational needs.
During the factory floor tour, the students tracked a trailer as it progressed along the production line, observing the integration of multiple sub-assemblies at various stages. The group also witnessed the sourcing and processing of raw steel into individual components engineered for subsequent manufacturing phases.
A key highlight of the tour was observing a robotic welder in action, which offered a practical demonstration of how automated and advanced welding technologies enhance structural strength, durability, consistency, and overall quality within heavy engineering.
In the finishing bays, the students observed the installation of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) alongside electrical configurations, including lighting and power units. Wheels and tyres were fitted to match customer specifications, and the group was introduced to the mechanics of air and hydraulic braking systems, gaining an understanding of the critical role these components play in safety and operational performance.
The visit concluded with a presentation from company director Caitriona Gribben, who outlined the historical development and commercial growth of McCauley Trailers. She also detailed the diverse range of employment and career pathways available within the business.
The students found the experience both informative and inspiring, noting the emphasis placed on planning, efficiency, and workflow management within a high-output manufacturing environment. The trip provided real-world context to their studies and highlighted the varied skill sets required in contemporary machinery manufacturing.
For individuals considering their options after GCSEs, CAFRE offers the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land-based Engineering. Prospective students can find out more by visiting the Open Farm Weekend at Greenmount Campus, Antrim, on Saturday 13 or Sunday 14 June between 11:00 and 16:00, where they can tour the facilities, meet teaching staff, and discuss course details.
