Uisce Éireann Finalises Major Water Network Upgrade in Lismore

Construction News Image

Uisce Éireann has successfully finished a major upgrade to the water network in Lismore, marking the conclusion of an extensive Leakage Reduction Programme project that has replaced almost 3km of vulnerable and ageing watermains across the town. The final phase of the works has now been commissioned, delivering long-term infrastructure improvements by cutting leakage and providing a more resilient, reliable water supply for local businesses and households throughout Lismore.

This essential capital investment concentrated on replacing deteriorating sections of the underground network along Lismore Bridge and Deerpark Road, where frequent infrastructure bursts and high leakage levels had previously impacted local customers. The completed improvements are designed to lower the frequency of future pipe bursts, minimise supply disruptions, and establish a more secure water connection for the local community.

Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "We are delighted to bring this significant project in Lismore to completion. By replacing older, at-risk watermains, we are significantly reducing leakage and helping to protect treated drinking water from being lost. Most importantly, this means a safer, more reliable water supply for homes and businesses across the town. We would like to sincerely thank the Lismore community for their patience and continued support while these essential works were delivered."

This upgrade represents just one example of Uisce Éireann's ongoing daily efforts to mitigate water leaks. Addressing underground leakage remains a complex challenge, with Ireland maintaining over 65,000 km of subterranean water pipes—a distance vast enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Although most leaks are not visible on the surface, resulting in the loss of treated drinking water, steady progress is being achieved. National leakage levels have reached their lowest recorded point, with overall water loss successfully reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.

Members of the public can learn more about these ongoing initiatives by visiting the National Leakage Reduction Programme page.

As part of Uisce Éireann's sustained investment into Lismore's water infrastructure, a planning application has also recently been submitted for new water storage facilities. This proposed development is intended to further reinforce the resilience of the local supply and accommodate future growth in the region.
