The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved Galway County Council's application for funding under the OPW's Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
A total of €33,710 has been allocated to carry out a detailed survey of the surface water pipe network within the Bruach na Mara estate in Carna. The investigation will use jetting, suction and recording equipment to map the system and identify issues, with the findings determining the extent of any rehabilitation works required.
Introduced by the OPW in 2009, the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme finances local authorities to undertake small-scale flood mitigation works or studies that address localised flooding and coastal protection problems where solutions can be delivered quickly. Since its launch, the scheme has supported 256 applications from Galway County Council.
Projects estimated to cost up to €750,000 are eligible, with up to 90% funding available for approved proposals. Applications are assessed by the OPW against economic, social and environmental criteria, including a cost–benefit ratio. Works that are normally a local authority responsibility are generally not funded, though partial support may be considered where they also reduce flood risk to properties. Local authorities must ensure works do not increase flood risk elsewhere, and the commencement and progression of any approved works are matters for each authority.
