Grants backed by Waterford City and County Council, the Department of the Environment and IPB Insurance will support biodiversity, climate action and amenity schemes; applications close 24 July 2026.
The Local Environmental Action Fund (LEAF) has been launched in Bunmahon by the Cathaoirleach of the Comeragh District Area, Cllr. Seánie Power, on Tuesday 23 June. The initiative is designed to help communities across County Waterford deliver practical environmental improvements and boost local biodiversity.
Co-funded by Waterford City and County Council and IPB Insurance, and supported by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, the fund will offer financial assistance to community groups, residents’ associations and voluntary organisations to advance environmental sustainability, climate action and better local amenities.
Eligible projects include biodiversity and habitat creation, community gardens, anti-litter measures, environmental awareness campaigns and other small-scale climate action initiatives.
Launching the fund, Cllr. Seanie Power, said: "The Local Environmental Action Fund represents a valuable opportunity for communities across Waterford to take the lead in protecting and enhancing their local environment. We know the strength of our communities lies in their willingness to get involved, and this fund will empower groups to deliver meaningful change at local level, whether through biodiversity projects, tackling litter, or creating greener public spaces.
"This fund is about enabling communities to turn ideas into action. Across Waterford, there is a strong appetite to improve our local environment, and the Local Environmental Action Fund provides the practical support needed to make that happen. It will help build more sustainable, resilient, and vibrant communities for the future."
The programme also has the backing of IPB Insurance, which continues to support local authority-led community programmes nationwide.
John Hogan from IPB Insurance said: "At IPB Insurance, we are proud to support initiatives like the Local Environmental Action Fund that deliver real, positive impacts at community level. Local authorities and community groups are at the forefront of environmental action, and by working together we can help create more sustainable and resilient places for people to live, work, and thrive."
LEAF is now open for applications, with a deadline of 24 July 2026. Funding will prioritise proposals that show clear environmental benefits and strong community involvement.
