Uisce Éireann has submitted a planning application to Mayo County Council to upgrade the Ballyhaunis Wastewater Treatment Plant, marking a further step in its ongoing investment in wastewater services across Mayo.
The project proposes a substantial enhancement of the existing facility in the east Mayo town, increasing capacity from a population equivalent (PE) of 4,000 to 6,600 once completed.
Angus Hall of Uisce Éireann said the submission represents a significant advance for the scheme. "We are delighted to have reached the point of submitting our application for planning permission on this project," said Angus.
Angus added: "These upgrade works, once complete, will increase the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant in Ballyhaunis by over 50%. This will allow for an improved service for existing customers in Ballyhaunis, while also allowing for new development in the town in the years ahead. The upgrade will also help to safeguard the environment of the local area."
Planned works include upgrades to the inlet, mechanical and electrical systems, along with ancillary improvements.
As the upgrade will take place within the current site footprint, disruption to the local community is expected to be minimal, and the plant will continue operating throughout. Pending statutory approvals, construction is anticipated to begin in mid-2027.
