Energia Group's Flexible Generation (FlexGen) business and Siemens Energy have marked the start of a two-year refurbishment of the Huntstown 1 power plant, following a site event on 29 June 2026.
In operation for more than 20 years, Huntstown 1 has played a key role in securing electricity supply for Ireland, particularly in the greater Dublin area.
Once completed, the overhaul is expected to improve efficiency, lower emissions and increase operational flexibility, strengthening security of supply as demand rises and supporting the integration of more renewable energy onto the grid.
Manufacturing of critical equipment is already under way, with further preparatory work scheduled on site over the summer. Full upgrade works at Huntstown are due to begin in 2028 and will involve a couple of hundred people.
John Newman, Managing Director of FlexGen, said: "Energia and Siemens Energy have a partnership spanning over a quarter of a century, built on mutual trust and respect for the expertise from both companies. This long-standing partnership enables Energia Group to operate Huntstown as a dependable, flexible, and efficient power source to help Ireland transition to a greener energy future."
Dan Taylor, VP Gas Services UK & IE for Siemens Energy, said: "The refurbishment we'll carry out at Huntstown will provide more efficiency and more flexibility on the grid system and enable the security of supply for Ireland. Our working relationship is not a simple transaction, it's a partnership. We've reached a point where together, as partners, we are able to ensure the station will continue to provide power for decades to come".
