Uisce Éireann is set to begin a significant upgrade to the water mains south of Cavan town to create capacity for new housing over the coming years.
The project will see more than 1.8km of new mains laid along the Ballinagh Road (N55), running from the N55 roundabout at Corlurgan to the junction with the Killycannan/Cornaseer Road (L6566). Works are scheduled to start next week.
The scheme forms part of Uisce Éireann's Accelerated Growth programme, which targets areas with strong projected housing demand to support sustainable development.
Patricia Lowry, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said the upgrade will enhance the capacity and resilience of the existing network and provide the infrastructure needed for Cavan to deliver housing at scale in the years ahead. "Our Accelerated Growth programme is designed to increase resilience and boost capacity in towns such as Cavan, which are forecasted to experience significant growth in the coming years.
"This significant programme of mains replacement to the south of Cavan town will help to support the sustainable growth of the town, while also improving water quality for existing customers and driving down rates of leakage on the network."
Work areas will be confined to short sections to reduce disruption. For safety and efficiency, traffic management will include lane closures controlled by traffic lights, with local and emergency access maintained at all times.
Farrans Construction will deliver the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann. The works are expected to be completed by February 2027.
