Uisce Éireann is pressing ahead with key water network upgrades in Galway city, with a new phase of works starting on Presentation Road this week.
Delivered under Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, the project will replace 510 metres of ageing water mains with modern, high-performance pipes.
The upgrade is designed to enhance the quality of treated water reaching local homes and businesses and to make the network more resilient to bursts and other operational issues.
Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said customers can expect a range of improvements from the works.
"We have made significant progress in our programme of mains upgrades to the west of Galway city over the last 12 months, and this project on Presentation Road is the latest example of our commitment to deliver for customers and communities in Galway.
"These upgrades will provide an improved supply of water for homes and businesses at Presentation Road, Mill Street and the surrounding areas, while reducing the likelihood of operational issues on the network and helping us to reduce leakage rates."
To ensure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently, a temporary road closure will be in place. Galway City Council has granted a road closure licence from Monday, 6 July until Friday, 21 August.
The closure will apply along Presentation Road and Mill Street, from the junction of Presentation Road and Newcastle Road to the junction of Mill Street and Dominick Street Lower. Local and emergency access will be maintained throughout.
During the closure, traffic will be diverted via Dominick Street Lower, Dominick Street Upper, Henry Street, St Helen’s Street and Newcastle Road. Presentation Road and Mill Street will reopen for the week commencing Monday, 27 July to accommodate increased traffic during the Galway Races.
Farrans Construction will deliver the scheme on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected by late August.
