Work is due to start this summer on the £2.9 million Church Street Public Realm Scheme, marking a further step in Downpatrick's ongoing regeneration.

Construction is scheduled to get under way in early August 2026, following completion of current network upgrades by NIE and BT Openreach.

The project will deliver high-quality granite paving and natural stone kerbs, improved pedestrian crossings with tactile paving, replacement traffic signals, enhanced street lighting, and new street furniture and planters. Additional tree planting is also planned to help create a more attractive and welcoming setting for residents, businesses and visitors.

Councillor Glynn Hanna, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, said: "It is fantastic to see this significant Public Realm scheme moving forward and works commencing on Church Street. This investment will deliver a much-needed upgrade to this important part of Downpatrick, enhancing the streetscape and creating a more welcoming and attractive environment for residents, businesses and visitors".

He added: "The scheme represents another positive step in the continued regeneration of Downpatrick and I look forward to seeing the transformation of Church Street as the works progress."

John McQuillan Contracts has been appointed to carry out the works, which are expected to take around 12 months. The programme covers Church Street from Pillar Well Lane to the Scotch Street junction, and De Courcy Place/Lower English Street from its junction with Church Street to the frontage of Denvir's Hotel.

Downpatrick will remain open for business throughout. Access to homes, shops and community facilities will be maintained wherever possible, with advance notice provided where temporary restrictions are required. The contractor will liaise closely with affected property owners and occupiers to accommodate specific access needs.

To deliver the scheme safely while keeping two-way traffic and pedestrian routes in place, a small number of on-street parking spaces will be temporarily suspended and some bus stops moved during certain phases. These arrangements have been designed to minimise disruption and maintain progress.

Regular updates will be provided by John McQuillan Contracts, with ongoing engagement involving local councillors, statutory agencies, businesses and residents. The Council has thanked residents, businesses and visitors for their patience as the improvements are delivered and advises anyone travelling to or through Church Street to allow extra time during the construction period.
