Uisce Éireann will replace 2.8km of ageing water mains in Union Hall, west Cork, with works starting next week along the L-4224 and L-82631 at Myross to boost reliability and cut leaks.

The programme will see modern pipes installed to reinforce the local network and reduce the risk of bursts and leaks that have led to supply interruptions and the loss of treated drinking water.

Welcoming the project, Jack Cronin, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann, said: "Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap, home and throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we're helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Union Hall, now and for generations to come."

The works include new water service connections from the public main in the road to customers' property boundaries, linking them to individual supplies. Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will deliver the scheme on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected by December 2026.

Traffic management, including road closures, will be in place to protect the public and crews. Local and emergency access will be maintained, and the utility says it will work to keep any disruption to a minimum.

Uisce Éireann said the project is part of its national effort to reduce leakage. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes—enough to circle the earth one and a half times—finding and fixing leaks can be complex. National leakage is now at its lowest level, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
