Uisce Éireann will begin a major mains replacement later this month to improve water security in the Lough Atalia area of Galway, replacing more than 1.8km of ageing pipes along key routes, with completion expected in early 2027 and traffic measures including night-time lane closures.

Customers on and around Lough Atalia Road can expect a more reliable supply as the programme responds to persistent bursts, leaks and other operational issues reported in recent months.

The upgrades will reinforce the local network and are expected to reduce the frequency of bursts, delivering a cleaner and more dependable supply of treated water for nearby homes and businesses.

Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, noted repeated outages and service interruptions affecting Lough Atalia, Wellpark, College Road and the Old Dublin Road.

"We have designed this programme of mains replacements to address these issues head-on," said Enda.

"By replacing more than 1.8km of mains in the area, we will bolster the local network to significantly reduce the risk of operational issues affecting homes and businesses.

"As well as fewer bursts, the new pipes will provide a cleaner, safer supply of treated water to customers in the area, while helping us toward of goal of driving down rates of leakage on our networks."

Works will take place along the R338 (Moneenageisha Road and Dublin Road), the R339 (College Road) and the L-5048-0 (Lough Atalia Road/Bothar na Long), with backyard service upgrades also planned on College Road. In total, 1,821 metres of new mains will be installed.

To protect crews, road users and the public, traffic management will include road narrowing and clearly signposted night-time lane closures.

Farrans Construction will deliver the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with construction due to begin later this month and finish in early 2027.
