Uisce Éireann has begun a €12 million upgrade of the Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant, which provides drinking water to over 45,000 people across County Louth.

The scheme builds on a 2024 pilot that proved highly effective at removing naturally occurring manganese from the water supply. As part of the works, the new filtration technology trialled in the pilot will be installed on a permanent basis.

This investment forms part of Uisce Éireann's wider programme to strengthen water infrastructure in Louth. Once complete, the upgrade will improve drinking water quality, support ongoing compliance with drinking water regulations, and deliver a more resilient and reliable supply for homes and businesses in the region.

The project was prioritised following seasonal incidents of water discolouration in recent years.

Uisce Éireann's Programme Manager, Ian Walsh said: "We are delighted to see work begin on this important project for Dundalk and the wider Louth area. Building on the success of the pilot study, this investment will deliver lasting benefits for customers by improving water quality and strengthening the resilience of the local water supply.

The upgrade is being delivered by Veolia Water Ireland on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with works scheduled to finish in early 2028.
