Roscommon County Council, in partnership with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, has opened applications for the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) 2027 and the BHIS Historic Thatched Buildings Stream 2027.
Under BHIS 2027, funding of between €2,500 and €50,000 is available to support conservation works to historic buildings and structures. The dedicated Historic Thatched Buildings Stream offers grants of up to €20,000 for the conservation of historic thatched buildings.
The council stresses that BHIS is a highly competitive scheme with a limited budget. Applications will be assessed against a range of criteria, including the condition of the structure and the nature of the proposed works. Where funding is approved, awards may be less than the amount sought. Successful applications are due to be announced in January 2027.
Eligible structures include Protected Structures, buildings within Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs), vernacular structures and historic thatched buildings.
Applicants must engage an appropriately qualified conservation professional to oversee the works, and submit a comprehensive, robust methodology with their application.
Application materials and guidance are available via the council's website, including: the BHIS 2027 Guidance Booklet for Applicants; BHIS 2027 Qualifying & Non-Qualifying Works; BHIS 2027 Circular; BHIS 2027 Application Form A (RCC); and the corresponding circular and Application Form A for the Historic Thatched Buildings Stream.
Completed applications must be clearly marked "Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2027" and submitted by 5.00pm on Friday 30 October 2026 either by post to: Heritage Office, Roscommon County Council, Áras an Chontae, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon, F42 VR98, or by email to [email protected].
