Adrigole Water Main Upgrade Bolsters Reliability Of Supply

Construction News Image

Families and businesses in Adrigole can expect a steadier drinking water supply after Uisce Éireann completed important network upgrades.

Around 2.5km of ageing water mains have been replaced with modern pipework to curb bursts and leaks, improving resilience following recent outages and low pressure.

The previous mains were prone to failures, leading to service interruptions and the loss of treated water. The new infrastructure is intended to reduce disruption, minimise water wastage and provide a more consistent service for households, local enterprises and community facilities. Uisce Éireann thanked residents for their patience during the works and acknowledged the impact that supply problems can have on daily life.

Jack Cronin, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "This investment is about delivering real benefits for the people of Adrigole. By replacing ageing pipes, we are helping to reduce the risk of future interruptions and putting in place a stronger network that will better support the community's needs

"We understand the impact recent disruptions have had on families and businesses and would like to thank customers for their patience while these works were completed. The improvements made will benefit the Adrigole community with a more dependable water supply long into the future."

The project replaced water mains along the R574, from the Water Treatment Plant and Reservoir to Adrigole Bridge. Work began in late April, the mains upgrade finished in mid-August, and final road reinstatement is scheduled for completion in September 2026. Uisce Éireann engaged with the community through online briefings with West Cork elected representatives and the Adrigole Water Action Group, and held an in-person drop-in event at the Caha Community Centre in late April. Ward and Burke Construction Ltd delivered the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

The scheme forms part of Uisce Éirean'’s ongoing efforts to combat leakage nationwide. With more than 65,000kms of underground mains, detection and repair can be complex, yet national leakage has fallen from 49% in 2014 to 36% today—the lowest level recorded.
