Waterford City and County Council has begun work on the Carrickphierish Recreation Park.

Backed by €450,000 from the Community Recognition Fund (CRF) and €100,000 from the Making Places for and with Teenagers Initiative, the project will deliver new amenities for the surrounding community.

The scheme covers the design and build of a playground and a multi-use games area, alongside landscaping, new footpaths and lighting, creating an inclusive outdoor space for all ages.

A standout element is Waterford’s first purpose-built ‘Teenage Hangout Space’ — a safe, sheltered, all-weather area co-designed with local teenagers. It will feature informal seating, music speaker pods and equipment to support parkour movements.

The project is jointly funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, and Waterford City and County Council.

Paul Johnston, Senior Engineer with Waterford City and County Council, said: "This park has been shaped by the input of the local community, which will not only have a positive impact on health and well-being, but will also enhance the area for its growing population.

"The new facilities in the park are designed to encourage active lifestyles and community engagement in a safe, inclusive outdoor environment."
