Greystones Community College has officially opened the doors of its purpose-built campus in Greystones, Co Wicklow, marking a major milestone for the school and the wider community. The event was attended by Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris TD and Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton TD, alongside students, staff, parents and local representatives.
Delivered by BAM on behalf of the Department of Education and Youth, the investment provides a modern, inclusive and sustainable home for the post-primary school, which was established in 2020. The new permanent base will meet rising demand for places across Greystones and neighbouring areas and brings the entire school together on a single site after several years operating from temporary locations.
Construction commenced following a sod-turning ceremony in August 2024 and the building reached full completion in February 2026. Set on a 12-acre site, the 11,000m² campus includes more than 50 classrooms, six science laboratories and an extensive suite of specialist spaces for Technology, Construction Studies, Design Communication Graphics, Multimedia, Art, Music and Home Economics. The design also incorporates dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) class hubs, a library, social learning areas, a sports centre, a fitness suite and outdoor recreation facilities to support both academic progress and student wellbeing.
"The official opening of Greystones Community College marks a significant milestone for the Greystones community. Delivered on behalf of the Department of Education and Youth, the new campus provides a state-of-the-art, sustainable and inclusive learning environment, bringing students and staff together in a purpose-built setting designed to support excellence in education." said Darren Devane, Director of Building, BAM Ireland.
Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris TD, who formally declared the campus open, said: "Today is a milestone achievement and one that everyone in Wicklow can be proud of. I want to thank Principal Ruairí Farrell and his leadership team, the teachers and staff, the Board of Management, KWETB, the Department of Education and Youth and BAM, who have delivered a campus this town can be proud of for generations. Most of all I want to thank the students themselves and the parents and families of Greystones and Delgany whose advocacy and determination made this happen.
"This campus is a great investment in the future of Greystones, Delgany and the wider area. As a Greystones native, it was a privilege to declare it officially open."
BAM said the project showcases its expertise in delivering high-quality education buildings using modern methods of construction and sustainable solutions, creating a future-focused environment for generations of learners. A detailed case study of the scheme has been published by the company.
