The West Limerick and North Kerry Community Fund is open to initiatives delivering long-term benefits within 20km of SSE's wind farms at Tournafulla, Rathcahill, Dromada and Athea in West Limerick, and Lenamore in North Kerry. The 2026 funding pot totals €122,605, with priority given to projects nearest the wind farms. Proposals from beyond the 20km boundary may also be considered where they can show a clear, measurable benefit within the Area of Benefit.
Applications should align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, notably Quality Education (SDG 4), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) and Climate Action (SDG 13). Bids are also expected to contribute to SSE's Community Funding Strategic Objectives by supporting the green transition or strengthening resilience, equity and learning at a local level.
Eligible projects could include energy efficiency upgrades, carbon reduction measures, sustainable living initiatives, improvements to community facilities, education and skills programmes, and activities that enhance wellbeing and community resilience.
Previous awards have delivered lasting value in the area. Monagea GAA, for example, secured funding from last year's Major Projects Fund to install a 7.35kW solar PV array with 5.12kWh battery storage and to develop a community gym at its grounds in County Limerick.
Kevin Hogan, Chairman, Monagea GAA, said: "The new gym and solar energy system are already making a real difference to our community. People of all ages now have affordable access to a modern local fitness facility, while generating our own clean energy is helping the club reduce its running costs and become more sustainable. This investment has created a lasting community asset that will support healthier lifestyles and bring people together for many years to come."
SSE says the annual fund underscores its long-term commitment to the region. Since 2008, it has invested more than €3.75 million in community initiatives across West Limerick and North Kerry, including establishing a multi-annual Major Projects Fund to back larger, transformative schemes. Last year, in addition to the annual fund, around €380,000 was awarded to seven Major Project applicants, with funding released over three years as milestones are met.
Jacqueline Durnin, SSE Community Investment Manager, said: "SSE's Community Fund continues to support projects that strengthen communities, build local resilience and deliver lasting social and environmental benefits across West Limerick and North Kerry. As part of SSE's long-term commitment to community investment in the region, this funding is helping local organisations turn good ideas into meaningful local impact. We know there is strong demand for support, and we would encourage community groups, not-for-profit organisations and social enterprises to come forward with projects that can make a positive and lasting difference in their area."
