The new dual carriageway between Dundalk and Newry opened on Thursday.
Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern and Northern Ireland Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy jointly open the new route, which cost £86 million to develop.
The nine miles of road has been designed to help cut travelling times between Belfast and Dublin and the completion of the dual carriageway completes the first inter-urban route between the Irish capital and Northern Ireland.
Work is due to begin shortly on upgrading a further section of the A1 between Newry and the border to a dual carriageway.
