Shannon Development Appoints Consortium To Develop Free Zone Masterplan

Shannon Development has appointed a consortium led by Project Management Group (PM Group) and RKD Architects to draw up a Masterplan for the future development of the Shannon Free Zone in Co. Clare.

The Masterplan will provide the basis for the regeneration of Shannon Free Zone and the adjoining areas, and for Shannon’s further enhancement as one of Ireland's premier locations for modern internationally traded manufacturing and international services. This is a large-scale complex master planning project and will include greenfield, brownfield, regeneration and reconstruction master planning.

Mr Michael Leydon, Strategic Projects Manager for Shannon Development said: “This is a very important development for the Shannon Free Zone, Shannon International Airport and Shannon Town, for counties Clare and Limerick and for the Shannon Region, because it will serve as the basis for the regeneration and development of Shannon Free Zone in the coming decades. Its implementation over that period will result in large scale development of offices, laboratories, factories and warehouses, which will provide accommodation for the next generation of businesses and will maintain the Shannon Free Zone’s leading position in the international market.”

Shannon Free Zone is Ireland's leading multi-sectoral business park and has Ireland's largest cluster of North American investments. It currently facilitates over 100 manufacturing and international service companies employing over 7,000 people. Physically, the Shannon Free Zone encompasses 600 acres of land and four million sq ft of buildings.

The Masterplan will be drafted by the end of the year and finalised in early 2008. A series of open forums and meetings will be held to seek input, contribution and participation in the Masterplan from Shannon Free Zone and Smithstown businesses, and from all local and regional stakeholders. The process will involve extensive interaction with Clare County Council and Shannon Town Council, Shannon Airport Authority, Shannon Town Centre master planners, West Park, and other private sector developers.

Shannon Development is an Irish government agency whose aims are to establish foreign direct investment on the Shannon Free Zone and to support existing foreign enterprises in expanding their businesses.
