Strabane 2000 Launches Landmark Bridges Project

A new project in Strabane is to focus on improving bridge infrastructure in the town.

Strabane 2000’s ‘Strabane – Crossing the River Mourne’ project aims to develop two pedestrian bridges. One is due to connect Meeting House Street to the Melvin Park Sports Complex area and the other is due to join Bradley Way and John Wesley Street.

Sustrans Connect2 programme has included the pedestrian bridge at the Melvin Sports Complex area in its bid for a multi-million pound grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Living Landmarks: The People’s Millions competition. The winner will be decided by public TV vote in December 2007 on ITV1.

Strabane 2000’s chairman, Councillor Jarleth McNulty, explained: “We now need to show that we have to support for this project to win the vote. The backing of the community is critical.”

Strabane District Council and Strabane Chamber of Commerce and Industry united to form the Strabane 2000 initiative in 1997, to examine the regeneration of the town centre.

The Strabane 2000 Initiative complements Strabane District Council's strategy on promoting economic and social development. The implementation of this Initiative also provides a new model of joined up Government in action with Government Departments, the District Council, the Education and Library Board and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, working together with the community to put in place the infrastructure for sustainable development in Strabane.
