Ireland’s national training and employment authority, FÁS, have announced the introduction of a new Electrical Apprenticeship Course at its Ballina Training Centre in County Mayo.
The move coincides with the closure of the Auto Turning facility in Ballina, after eight years of operation. The course will address the shortage of skilled workers in the sector.
The course will provide places for 28 trainees when it begins later on in the year, and two instructors will be added to cater for the course.
FÁS Ballina already provides courses that train apprentices in the art of carpentry and joinery, and this course is set to provide skilled electricians in the construction industry.
According to a spokesperson for FÁS, the provision of the Auto Turning Course, which is the only one of its kind in the country, will remain under review, and state-of-the-art equipment will be used to train the apprentices.
