Plans are currently being drawn up to develop quality bus lanes running alongside traffic at Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
The Quality Bus Network (QBN) project office, established by local authorities in the Dublin area, is preparing the concept design and evaluating a variety of options for bus lanes through the three kilometre long park.
The introduction of the lanes would reduce the journey time of Navan and Cavan buses as well as Castleknock and Blanchardstown buses.
QBN project manager Ciaran de Burca has revealed that engineers and consultants have been employed to draft plans for the possible bus lanes.
However, he said the matter still had to be discussed with local authorities, the Office of Public Works (OPW) and bus companies.
“We are looking at various options,” Mr de Burca said. “We are considering a bus lane from the polo grounds to Parkgate Street or from the Phoenix roundabout onwards.
“The road is wide enough for single lane traffic and a bus lane but parking near the zoo entrance might have to be reviewed.”
He concluded: “Bus lanes on the approach road, around Castleknock Gate, would also be required. The plan is only at its early stages.”
