Belfast’s Titanic Quarter is set to be the location of a new state of the art Public Record Office, it has been revealed.

Culture Minister Edwin Poots made the announcement today while visiting the new site, which is adjacent to the Gateway building at the entrance to the Titanic Quarter.

The Minister said: "My Department has committed £30 million to the re-location of the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) in the hope that everyone from the region and indeed visitors to Northern Ireland can use the resources it holds.

“The new state of the art facilities will greatly enhance public access, with the new building being prominently located within easy reach of many transport routes.”

He continued: "The project to relocate the Public Record Office is very exciting and significant and shows the Government’s commitment to acknowledging the importance and inherent value of the unique cultural assets which PRONI holds.

“It is also important to ensure good building design and it is my desire that the new Public Record Office building will be a legacy which current and future generations will both cherish and use."

Staff are seeking a new location because there is no longer enough space at The Public Records Office in Balmoral Avenue in south Belfast.
