The new chairman of the Irish branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) has been elected - with Joe Behan taking up the office for the year 2007 / 2008. He is the Institute’s twenty-second chairman in Ireland.

A consulting engineer, Joe Behan B.E., FIEI, FCIArb heads up the two Dublin-based firms of J.P. Behan Associates Consulting Civil & Structural Engineers and Behan Conflict Consultants.

He also tutors in mediation and arbitration for training programmes run by both University College of Dublin and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Irish branch).

Having practised as an arbitrator and mediator for over 10 years, combined with numerous appearances as an expert witness in various cases, as well as having conciliated in many disputes in the construction industry, he has extensive practical and theoretical experience in all aspects of alternative dispute resolution.

Joe Behan sits on a number of panels of arbitrators, including Engineers Ireland, The Law Society and the Construction Industry Federation. He also acts as an adjudicator and mediator with the Private Residential Tenancies Board.

He is one of only two Irish accredited mediators on the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ London Panel of Mediators.

Mr Behan has been an active member of the CIArb for many years and was elected a Fellow in 1999. He is also a Fellow of Engineers Ireland.
