A new Institute of Designers in Ireland book has been launched by the Minister for Education and Science in the Chester Beatty Library.

Mary Hanafin launched the book, called 'Why Design: A Guide to Studying Design in Ireland', which was born from a desire to give second level students a greater degree of familiarity with design as a study path and as a career.

Supported by the Office of the Minister of Education and Science, a group o members in the institute of Designers in Ireland worked on collating together information about design that would ensure that students were fully aware of what design means as a career.

The Minister spoke of the important role that Irish design currently plays in promoting the image of Irish creativity at home and abroad. She praised the range of courses to Masters and PhD’s across a bewildering range of disciplines - graphics, interiors, architecture, new media, product, furniture, fashion and textile design.

Minister Hanafin complimented 'Why Design' on offering a "snapshot" of design courses currently on offer throughout Ireland; a taste of the richness and diversity of design education at third level throughout the country.

Tracey Fahey, President of the Institute of Designers of Ireland, speaking at the launch agreed with the Minister and commented on the value of sustaining of a research and development culture in Ireland.

"Currently in Ireland, there is a real impetus towards the sustaining of a research and development culture in Ireland. Design plays a crucial role in terms of innovation and development. A good design education teaches students to problem solve, to think creatively, to research options, to develop and test designs and to respond to client needs."

Designed by Rob Chivers of top Irish design firm Designworks, 'Why Design' aims to promote the message of good design and attract budding designers who will bring Ireland into the 21st Century. It is available through the office of the Institute of Designers in Ireland.
