A major seminar on nuclear energy and its future in Ireland will take place this Thursday.
Hosted by Engineers Ireland, the seminar will be addressed by international experts and will contribute to the national debate on whether or not nuclear energy should play in role in solving Ireland’s energy supply challenge.
At last year’s Engineers Ireland annual conference, the Taoiseach urged engineers to explore the options for Ireland’s future energy supply. The Minister for Energy Eamon Ryan echoed this earlier this year when he called for a debate on the possible role of nuclear energy in Ireland. Nuclear power is proposed internationally as a potential solution of the security of energy supply challenge. It is considered the cleanest energy per unit yet in Ireland we seem to have dismissed it without any real debate. This seminar will bring together expert contributors from both sides of the debate to address issues including nuclear safety and the environmental impact of nuclear energy.
Those addressing the seminar include Frank Turvey (former RPII Assistant Chief Executive), Richard Ivens (European Atomic Forum), Dr Johan Slabber (Chief Technology Officer, Pebble Bed Modular Reactor, South Africa) and Pat Finnegan (GRIAN).
