A report released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has revealed a 25.6 per cent increase in the number of homes granted planning permission in the second quarter of this year, compared to the same period last year.

The CSO said that planning permission was granted for 23,988 homes in the second three months of the year, in comparison to 19,097 between April and June last year.

It also revealed that permission was granted for 18,201 houses and 5,787 apartments in the second quarter of the previous year - increases of 21.2 per cent and 41.7 per cent on the same figures in the three months last year.

The figures showed one-off houses accounted for 19.5 per cent of all the new dwelling units which were granted permission, with a 14 per cent increase in the amount of people opting for an extension.

In County Cork, 985 dwellings got permission, while 350 homes received the green light in Co Kerry. In Co Donegal, 281 got permission, while Co Kildare got 311.
